Day 127 / Year 2
09.04.11
Dad found this giant paper wasp nest in their yard today. He waited until dark to "take care" of it. I did some research to find out what kind of wasps they were, and found out they are Bald-Faced Hornets. I'm glad he waited until night time and didn't have any problems because here is what I found out:
"The bald-faced hornet lives throughout North America. They are best known for their large football-shaped paper nest, which they build in the spring for raising their young. These nests can sometimes reach 3 feet tall.
Bald-faced hornets are protective of their nests and will sting repeatedly if the nest is physically disturbed. They are more aggressive than most other wasps and it is not considered safe to approach the nest for observation purposes. The bald-faced hornet will aggressively attack with little provocation." YIKES - glad they didn't get the chance to "aggressively attack"!!!
